What is plasmalogen?
Plasmalogen is a type of phospholipid found in cell membranes. It is thought to have the function of protecting cells from active oxygen species through its antioxidant effect and storing useful fatty acids such as DHA in the body. It is abundant in areas where cells use large amounts of oxygen, such as the heart and skeletal muscles, and is characterized by abundance especially in the brain.
The plasmalogen levels in the body decrease with age. In addition to its relationship with age, plasmalogen has also been reported to decrease in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients and has been studied as a compound involved in cognitive function.
Development Story
We began our research on plasmalogen in 2007 when we applied “Research on Functional Phospholipids Derived from Adult Chickens” to the ‘Promotion of Practical Application of Private-Sector R&D’ project of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Adult chickens are hens that are raised for egg production. Because they are raised for a longer period than broilers, their meat is tougher and their use as meat is limited. We have studied to make effective use of these adult chickens, of which several hundred million are produced annually, and have succeeded in extracting plasmalogen from their meat.
We hope that we can contribute to the fulfilled and healthy diet through the effective use of adult chickens.
